Disease View

Describes how to use the "Disease View" visualization in PopHR

The disease visualization is useful when trying to compare an indicator across region and year, as well as compare a region across a set of related indicators.

Page Layout

The page contains the control bars (top and bottom) and the data visualization of disease view. The graph below shows the annotations of the layout of the disease view and the annotations are directed by blue arrows.

The layout include the title of current visualization (top left), the data visualization using map view (top left, below the title), the data visualization using time series view (top right), the data visualization using strip plot (lower half of the screen), and year slider (bottom).

What the plot represents?

The three visualization plots are focused on the selected indicator, which is indicated by the visualization title. The map shows the indicator values using a 7-categories classification. The time series shows a dotted black line representing the benchmark value of the selected indicator across years.

The strip plot shows the causes and consequences of the central concept (the concept of the selected indicator, e.g., the central concept is excess weight in the graph below). The left side of strip plot lists all the concepts of upstream risk factors and the right side of the strip plot lists all the concepts of downstream consequences. Under each concept (displayed in bold), there is an indicator and its values are organized from low (left) to high (right) in circles and each circle represents a region.

Features

The graph below shows the annotations of the features in the disease view and annotations are directed by the blue arrows.

How to select a region in disease view?

The three visualization plots are interactive. Users can select a region of interest by 1) clicking on the corresponding shape in the map; 2) clicking on the corresponding circle in strip plot, and the selected region will be added to time series as a new line. The selected region is highlighted in teal in all three visualization plots. In time series and strip plot, the benchmark value is the value for the whole population.

How to change an indicator in the strip plot?

In strip plot, user can change the indicator of a concept by clicking on the downward arrow in teal under the concept name to open the drop-down list. No arrow below the concept means there is no other indicator available.

Under certain stratification, data may not be available, therefore, no circle displays. For example, as showed in the graph below, the proportion of population with low income is not available at health region level for the year of 2014 and no circle displays for that indicator.

How to find more when data are not available for the selected concept?

There are two ways to find more data for that indicator or concept: 1) open User Preferences, and turn on the missing data imputation function which provides imputed data for the years that real data are not available. Local linear interpolation method is used to compute the missing data; 2) if available, change the indicator using the drop-down list and data may available for the newly selected indicator. If the new indicator is only available at a higher geo resolution, the corresponding geo label will be displayed next to the indicator name.

How to add the second indicator to time series?

The strip plot allows users to add or drop the second indicator to time series. By clicking on the concept name in strip plot, the indicator of selected concept will be added or deleted as line(s) with triangles in time series.
