Map

Describes how to use the "map" visualization in PopHR.

The map view is useful when trying to compare an indicator across multiple regions and view its spatial distribution. It provides, for a specific year, the indicator values of region represented as a specific shade on a single hue progression.

The figure above shows a map of the prevalence of diabetes in the year 2014, stratified by CLSCs within the Montreal CMA. For more details on information contained in the title, see the Visualization Title help page.

The distribution of indicator values represented by every region’s color can be understood from the legend located on the top right of the page. While the distribution of regional values is continuous, the map classifies values into 7 separate bins to help with comparison and interpretation. Bins are defined by breaks at values that allow the bins to represent equally sized ranges.

At the top of the legend, you will find the current unit of the indicator. If no unit is shown, it means the indicator is dimensionless or "unitless". At the bottom of the legend is the numerical value for benchmark (at this moment, the benchmark value is the value for the whole population).

More information about a regional value can be obtained by clicking on the region. This selection highlights the region by drawing a teal outline around its boundaries and opens a contextual panel showing specific details about the region. In the figure below, the CLSC of Parc-Extension is highlighted after being selected, opening a panel showing the region’s name, the year of the indicator value, the unit of the indicator, along with the value itself and a 95% confidence interval. This selection can be undone by closing the panel or by clicking on another region.

At the bottom, is both the year slider selector, and the control bar. Note that the map cannot be stratified by age or sex.
